Spray 12 regular muffin cups with non-stick cooking spray. If you are using silicon muffin moulds, they don't need to be greased.
Sieve together the refined flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Transfer it to a large plastic or glass bowl and add the whole wheat flour and mix well again.
In a blender add buttermilk, egg, oil, bananas and vanilla essence and grind it to a fine paste.
Pour this mixture into another large plastic or glass bowl.
Fold* the dry ingredients into the banana-buttermilk mixture.
Fill muffin cups 2/3 full. Garnish with chocolate chips over batter in each cup. Bake for 18 to 20 minutes.

* To "fold in" an ingredient means you should gently and gradually add it in, a little at a time, using a spatula (the rubber scraper thing) to make horizontal sweeping motions, or mix it turning the spatula in the ''figure of 8''.
** You do NOT want to dump the flour in all at once and mix it roughly or haphazardly, this would make the muffins tough or chewy.
